An injured spine can be operated on like this - through small incisions
Surgeons percutaneously implanted screws into the thin legs of the deformed vertebrae without touching the spinal cord, and inserted an intricately curved rod under the skin to connect the screws together.
The doctors worked in two steps. Through an incision in the chest, they replaced the shattered vertebrae with titanium prostheses, and then, through punctures in the back, they placed 16 screws, with which the spine was finally secured.
