This week has been really tough for my family. Both my grandma and mom ended up in the hospital with COVID-19. They are feeling better now, and I hope they will fully recover soon.

This situation prompted me to teach you the expression that can describe one of their first mild COVID symptoms: to be or feel under the weather.

To be or feel under the weather means not to feel very well; to feel slightly sick.

For example,

My mom started to feel a bit under the weather last Monday: she had a sore throat and a slight fever.

My grandma, on the other hand, was already under the weather on Sunday. She didn’t have a sore throat, but her fever was higher than my mom’s.

In both cases, COVID started with fairly mild symptoms. So, take care of yourselves and be extra cautious even though you just feel a bit under the weather.

Have you or your family members/ friends had COVID? What is your or their story of fighting the disease? Let me know in the comments down below.

5 WAYS TO SAY CONGRATULATIONS:

Way to go! (=well done)

I’ve heard you won the first prize. Way to go girl!

You’re on fire! (=performing at the top level of your abilities)

What an amazing song you wrote! You’re on fire!

Well done you!

Your test results came in, and you passed it. Well done you!

You rock! (=you do it very well)

This cake you made is so yummy. You rock!

Hats off! (=said to praise someone for doing something helpful)

Hats off to Mark for doing such a great job!

Do you know any other ways to say congratulations?

Last month we talked about break a leg, an expression we use instead of good luck.

So I figured we can dive deeper and learn some more alternatives for good luck, which I hear my students saying way too often.

5 WAYS TO SAY GOOD LUCK:

I wish you the best of luck/ Best of luck

I’m sorry you’re leaving. Best of luck to you in your new school.

Knock them dead! / Knock ’em dead! (=impress/shock them)

See you after the interview! Knock them dead, girl!

Go get them! / Go get ‘em! (=impress/shock them)

I know you’re nervous, but you’re going to win this game! Now go get them!

Blow them away! (=impress/shock someone)

Your audition is tomorrow? Blow them away!

You've got this / You got this (=you can do this)

You are so ready for this test. You got this!

Write your example with one of these expressions in the comments down below.

2021-03-22 21:01:22 Last weekend was no picnic for me. I had so many things to do that I feel even more tired than after a workweek.

When something is no picnic, it means it's quite difficult and unpleasant; it's not easy or enjoyable.

For example,

Raising two kids is no picnic, believe me.

Talking with my dad about me moving out was no picnic.

It might be no picnic spending your whole workday in front of a computer.

How was your weekend? Was it no picnic too? Let me in the comments down below.
