Etymology: Many mattresses in the early 20th century were little more than linen or sacks stuffed with whatever material that was readily available. Consequently, many filled their cloth sacks with materials such as straw or hay. Before getting into bed, people would strike the mattress to shape it into the most comfortable surface possible, and also to make sure no bugs were hiding inside them.
