Sor Joanna Angélica de Jesus, the first casualty of the Brazilian war of independence.
By January 1822, Pedro I of Brazil had severed ties with his father, and the sedition of the Brazilian crown was a fact.
Portuguese troops were instructed by Lisbon to hunt down pro-independence rebels.
The troops often resorted to looting the places invaded by them, and in February 19 they tried to force themselves into the Our Lady of Lapa Convent in Salvador, then a major port city.
Sor Joanna resisted, and was killed at the age of 60 by a Portuguese bayonet.
Her final words were: "Back off, you band of robbers, respect the house of God! You'll only enter here over my dead body!"
Major riots followed her death.
Following the proclamation of independence, armed fights broke out especially in the coastal cities and ports.
She has her name inscribed in the Brazilian Book of Heroes of the Fatherland.
