Wilma Rudolph became the first American woman to win three gold medals in the Olympic games. After the 1960 Olympics in Rome, she earned the nickname “The Tornado” and was known as the fastest woman on earth. When she returned to her hometown of Clarksville, Tennessee, she refused to participate in the welcome home parade if it was segregated; the celebration in her honor was the first integrated event in the town. In April 1961, she met with President Kennedy in the White House with her mother, a friend, and the coach of the 1960 Olympics track team. After her retirement from track and field at age 22 she went on a goodwill tour of West Africa for the State Department and started a teaching career.
