Not as popular as Nur-Sultan (Kazakhstan capital formerly known as Astana) Almaty is a very interesting city and definitely worth a visit. The city it's surrounded by mountains and it's the perfect place to start exploring the south-eastern part of Kazakhstan. If it's too hot or too cold to walk around Almaty you should check out the subway. The architecture of the metro stations is Soviet even though it was open in 2011. It's one of the cleanest subway system I've ever seen and the stations are very beautiful.
