2022-12-30 18:27:53 We understand that navigating life in America also impacts English-speaking immigrants as they adjust to life in a new country with its own unique linguistic and cultural quirks.

Daily challenges related to speaking English emerged as a common theme for many immigrants.

Here are 5 stats about incoming immigrants:

1. Among Asian Americans ages 5 and older, 58% of immigrants speak English proficiently, compared with nearly all of the U.S. born who say the same (94%).

There is language diversity among Asian immigrants living in the U.S. The vast majority (86%) of Asian immigrants 5 and older say they speak a language other than English at home, while 14% say they speak only English in their homes.

2. Some participants mentioned that when they struggled to speak in English, they noticed frustration from people they were interacting with. A Taiwanese woman described her experience at stores:

“Because my English isn’t that good, I often feel slighted by shopkeepers … some lose their patience with me.”

3. There were participants who recalled feelings of fear at school, not only because they did not know the language but because they did not understand how American society and schools functioned. One immigrant woman of Vietnamese origin recalled not knowing whom to ask for help because no one in her family understood American culture.

4. Some participants recalled their decision to purposely live in a place without other immigrants from their own ethnic group. This allowed them to immerse themselves in American culture, including English language, and offered an opportunity to practice speaking with native speakers.

5. American pop culture and media served as an important tool in many immigrants’ English-learning journey. Focus group participants shared how watching American television, listening to radio and podcasts, and reading publications in English helped them improve their comprehension, speaking and writing skills.

2022-12-28 18:45:36 A lot of Non-native English speakers are navigating the world of "good" and "bad" English.

We understand that in a conversation, the minute a native English speaker comes in, then the understanding goes down.

Here are 5 simple steps to keep the communication smooth:

1. Be Inquisitive: Keep asking the native English speaker what they mean when they use an esoteric jargon (i.e. "Hit a Home Run"). You would be surprised how many folks are happy to discuss what they mean.

2. Be Patient: Everyone's communication style is a little different and a little patience goes a long way when you want to gain mastery in American English

3. Relax: When esoteric jargon gets thrown in, it's gets uncomfortable and doesn't give you a chance to relate. Relax the body and mind. Relax your body, relax your behavior, relax your acts. Walk in a relaxed way, eat in a relaxed way, talk, listen in a relaxed way. Slow down every process. Don't be in a hurry and don't be in haste.

4. Enjoy: Learning is a process not the goal. Don't strive for perfection. There is no such thing as perfection. Once you understand this, then you start enjoying the present.

5. Be Playful: Fun is the most important word in the English language. It is the only word that can give a sense of playfulness, can make you a child again.

2022-12-24 18:01:11 Good morning Telegram Fam! What American TV shows does everyone watch? A great way to understand American English is to watch shows on Amazon Prime or Netflix.

2022-12-23 18:19:33 This might seem like a useful shortcut, but it’s a bad habit that will make your pronunciation even harder to correct in the long run.

2022-12-23 18:19:16 With the similarities identified, you can focus on the sounds that don’t exist in your native tongue. Resist the temptation to simply compare these unfamiliar sounds with similar ones from your native language.

2022-12-23 18:18:57 Good morning Twitter Fam!

Tip # 2 on how to be a native speaker:

Identify What’s ‘Weird’ About The Pronunciation

With this exposure, you’ll quickly notice that your new language has many sounds in common with your native tongue (even if those sounds are written differently).

2022-12-22 17:07:22 Good morning! Tips on becoming a native speaker:

Tip 1: Try recording your own voice and compare it with similar recordings online, marking all the differences in the pronunciation of each word. It’s a bit tedious, but it really makes for good voice talent practice.
