2022-08-20 13:20:22 Messi dribbles past MĂŒller as he goes in for a challenge during the 2014 World Cup Final.Photo credit should read ODD ANDERSEN/AFP via Getty ImagesYou didn’t read the headline wrong, but MatthĂ€us does make some valid points in his comparison.Thomas MĂŒller is one of the most, if not the most unique players in world football — even non-Bayern Munich or Bundesliga fans would tend to agree with that assessment. His uncanny ability to find open spaces to create chances for both himself and his teammates has earned him the nickname The Raumdeuter, and he has also been referred to as Radio MĂŒller for his vocal nature on the pitch. In his recent column for Sky Germany, Lothar MatthĂ€us even drew comparisons between MĂŒller and the venerable Lionel Messi.MĂŒller and Messi are of almost entirely different builds, have different mannerisms, and aren’t exactly on the same plane of statistical production. Still, MatthĂ€us recognized the ability both players have to consistently get into the perfect positions to make a difference — relying on sheer willpower and savvy rather than their physical edge.“You can see just from the fact that Thomas MĂŒller has to laugh when he misses a great chance, how much confidence he has in his own strength. It reminds me of Leo Messi, who often had to smile when he missed a hundred percent because he knew he’d make three more anyway,” MatthĂ€us wrote in his column (Tz).MĂŒller’s miss just before the halftime break during Bayern’s 6-1 win over Eintracht Frankfurt on the opening night of the Bundesliga illustrates this point. Bayern was on a breakaway, but Serge Gnabry’s pass into MĂŒller was just a little bit too far ahead of him. MĂŒller hit the turf after stretching out to make contact with the pass and his effort hit off the post and went out of play for a goal kick — careening off his own head on the way. It was the most MĂŒller of chances, and would have been the most MĂŒller of goals.Eintracht Frankfurt v FC Bayern MĂŒnchen - Bundesliga Photo by Stefan Matzke - sampics/Corbis via Getty ImagesSuch a miss would never deter a man like MĂŒller — who ended up with a brace of assists en route to an emphatic three points at Deutsche Bank Park. And last weekend against VfL Wolfsburg, after having spent most of his day on the right wing, MĂŒller popped up in front of goal at just the right time — to stick a foot out and deflect Joshua Kimmich’s long range effort into the net for Bayern’s second goal of the night.Ironically enough, MĂŒller has found himself on the winning end of head-to-heads against Messi for both club and country, the most recent of which came in the Champions League group stages last season. Bayern won both matches 3-0 and MĂŒller scored a goal in each of those legs. All things considered, there’s no player quite like MĂŒller, and his presence in attack always adds a creative spark. He is every bit as talismanic for Bayern and for Germany as the Argentinian maestro.

2022-08-20 10:20:41 Ryan Gravenberch, Kingsley Coman (white jerseys) stand next to Mathys Tel, Tanguy Nianzou (orange) as they look on during a training session.Fitting in. | Photo by A. Beier/Getty Images for FC BayernIs Kingsley Coman a natural winger? Not so fast, says his head coach.Everybody wants to play centrally, it seems. If you’ve played pickup soccer you’ve likely seen a field dotted with #10 jerseys, and numerous Bayern Munich players sometimes deployed on the wing — from Thomas MĂŒller to Leroy SanĂ© to Serge Gnabry — have expressed their greater comfort in front of goal. The youth setup is full of attacking midfielders as well. Now, according to coach Julian Nagelsmann, you can add Kingsley Coman to the list.“He fits very well into our concept,” Nagelsmann said in Friday’s pre-game press conference (as captured by @iMiaSanMia). “If you ask him, he’s not a winger, he likes to play centrally. But that goes for everyone and it starts when you’re young. But he can also play on the wings. For me it is important how he trains.”Bayern are preparing to travel to take on VfL Bochum this Sunday in Bundesliga action, with revenge on their mind after a 4-2 humiliation the last time these two teams faced off. It will be Coman’s first opportunity to start for Bayern in the Bundesliga this season, and one of Nagelsmann’s two central attacking midfield spots is where he’ll most likely slot in.“He also gave his all outside of team training and trained incredibly well,” Nagelsmann confirmed. “He has a great quality that we don’t want to do without. He’s definitely a candidate to start Sunday.”Coman has played on the wings throughout his Bayern career. It may be the case that he prefers the left, where he can cut inside from his strong foot — but that wouldn’t seem to be the same as starting and playing centrally. He might be Bayern’s truest, most natural winger, at least by reputation. And last year, he was often tasked with providing width, taking on either left or right fullback one-on-one.But Nagelsmann is a coach whose tactical priority is working the inside channels, the half-spaces where you can create rapid, direct initiatives on goal. With not one but two positions largely dedicated to this task, there’s room for all these attacking midfielders to play, and Coman is apparently the next. He’s already looked solid from the spot in his substitute appearance in the DFL-Supercup (check our article there for some screenshots to highlight it!) and it’s good news that the coaching staff feels he’s a natural fit, too.Sunday’s game against Bochum will likely be a full preview of what Nagelsmann is seeing of Coman’s central qualities in training. For a player looking to take the final steps to becoming a “big, big player” and a shout for the best in the world, this season has the chance to be a showcase.

2022-08-20 07:20:38 SV Werder Bremen v VfB Stuttgart - BundesligaPhoto by Martin Rose/Getty ImagesBayern Munich probably won’t be adding any more players during this window.Nagelsmann wants Sosa, but club content with squad (Bayern Insider Podcast via @iMiaSanMia)Bayern Munich has been linked to VfB Stuttgart star left-back/left wing-back Borna Sosa off-and-on for about a year now. The talented Croatian is a dynamic attacking presence, who would seem to be a perfect fit for Julian Nagelsmann’s system. The problem, of course, is that Bayern Munich already has a pretty good player at that spot in Alphonso Davies. With that, Nagelsmann will not get his man...and the club seems quite content with the roster it currently has:Bayern will not reinvest the fee of Tanguy Nianzou on a new left-back. FCB thought a lot about Borna Sosa, whom Nagelsmann would have liked to sign - but as things stand, the club is happy with the current squad and money is to be savedAs good as Sosa is, it would make no sense to get him right now for the following reasons:The cost: It can be assumed it would take €25-€30 million to get Sosa. The role: Would anyone want to pay that much for a back up? Davies has a contract through 2025 and is entrenched as the starter at left-back.The current depth: Behind Davies, Bayern Munich has both Lucas Hernandez and Josip Stanisic who can play left-back. The overall depth and versatility on the backline with those players, plus Dayot Upamecano, Matthijs de Ligt, Benjamin Pavard, and Noussair Mazraoui, alleviates the need for Sosa.If you really wanted to look for any good reason to actually get Sosa, it would only be if Davies wanted to play as a forward — or if Davies informed the club he will be leaving at the end of his deal. Even then, however, you really wouldn’t need to be looking for replacements until next summer at the earliest.Non-denial, denial from Watzke on CR7? (@FabrizioRomano)I am no fan of Cristiano Ronaldo, but the thought of him suiting up for Borussia Dortmund is more than intriguing. As for whether such a move would be realistic, who knows? BVB CEO Hans-Joachim Watzke said that there was no contact (so far), but didn’t outright deny it could happen:Borussia Dortmund CEO Watzke: “I love Cristiano Ronaldo - it's certainly a charming idea to see Cristiano play at Signal Iduna Park. But there is no contact at all between the parties involved”, he told @Sky_Jesco. #BVB— Fabrizio Romano (@FabrizioRomano) August 19, 2022Executives don’t always tell the truth, but there is not too much of a reason to doubt what Watzke says. This all could be a matter of some folks doing some UCL math to see which clubs could conceivably take on Ronaldo...or there could be some legitimacy to it.At this point, no one knows anything except CR7, his agent Jorge Mendes, and any clubs that he may — or may not — have spoken to.Fein-ally an exit? 2022-08-20 06:20:32 Bayern MĂŒnchen II v SpVgg Unterhaching - 3. LigaMartin is no longer happy. | Photo by Alexander Hassenstein/Getty ImagesTimo Kern is back... for this.Bayern Munich II were doing rather decently, fourth place in table, and no losses since the Ansbach game but that all came crashing down, after they lost 2-0 to FC Schweinfurt on Friday. This is only their second defeat of the season. As compared to the draw against Unterhaching, coach MartĂn Demichelis made only one change: veteran Timo Kern in the place of Gabriel Vidović.(Timo has been away for what feels like so long and he comes back for... this. Sad.)Bayern II fell behind in the 2nd minute, as Felix Schwarzholz netted a goal and Tim Kraus followed that up, in the 22nd minute, making it 2-0 before half-time.Grant-Leon Ranos and Lucas Copado proved yet again why they are among the team’s brightest prospects. The likes of Lovro Zvonarek, David Herold, and Justin Janitzek were trying their best and yet couldn’t make any real impact. A few noteworthy performances for sure, but disappointing to say the least, because Bayern could have been the better team tonight, if it weren’t for the inability to finish.Beyond a certain point, the high intensity didn’t matter anymore because the Schweinfurt defense was locked tight — giving die Amateure no chance to score.Demichelis believes Schweinfurt were the better team and hopes his team had a few learning points from the game. “Schweinfurt was much more aggressive against the ball overall. Unfortunately, today we took a step backwards and not forwards. We could have played three or four hours without scoring a goal,” he said, disappointed in Bayern II’s performance.Die Amateure will be facing ninth-placed TSV Buchbach on August 23rd, away at SMR-Arena.

2022-08-20 04:20:36 FC Bayern MĂŒnchen - Training SessionPhoto by S. Mellar/FC Bayern via Getty ImagesIs there a club willing to take the Bayern Munich reserve right-back?It sounds like Bayern Munich right-back Bouna Sarr is going to have to put on his business suit and fedora, grab his briefcase, and hit the pavement like a vacuum cleaner salesman from the 1960s if he wants to find a new club ahead of the World Cup.On the Bayern Insider podcast hosted by Sport Bild’s Christian Falk and Tobi AltschĂ€ffl (as captured by @iMiaSanMia), the journalists noted that Bayern Munich wants to sell Sarr as soon as possible (likely to get at least some of his salary off the books), but the player might have to help do some legwork to make a deal happen:Bayern definitely want to offload Bouna Sarr. Still no offers as of now, but pressure is on the player to find a club before the end of the window as he wants to play at the World Cup with Senegal. In reality, we know Sarr’s agent would be doing the heavy-lifting here, but there has maybe never been a more clear-cut case of a player needing to leave a club.

2022-08-20 03:20:31 FC Bayern MĂŒnchen v VfL Wolfsburg - BundesligaPhoto by Harry Langer/DeFodi Images via Getty ImagesWith today’s transfer market landscape, it’s honestly hard to argue with Matthaus here.As a collective, Bayern Munich have looked very good to start the season: three wins out of three against the likes of RB Leipzig, Eintracht Frankfurt, and VfL Wolfsburg. They’ve outscored their opponents by a combined 13-4 and the attacking line is showing no signs of slowing down despite Robert Lewandowski’s departure to FC Barcelona. And so far, it’s been nineteen-year-old Jamal Musiala that’s been the star of the show — which according to pundits like former Bayern and Germany player Lothar Matthaus, is seriously raising the youngster’s stock.Musiala has already tallied four goals and an assist, and is currently the Bundesliga’s top goal-scorer with three goals in the league. The most recent of these came in Bayern’s 2-0 win over VfL Wolfsburg, and it earned him heaps of praise from Bayern CEO Oliver Kahn for the way he muscled through a number of Wolfsburg defenders, stayed on his feet, and buried his finish into the bottom-left corner. In a recent edition of SportBild (via @iMiaSanMia on Twitter), Lothar Matthaus said that he feels Musiala is already a player that’s worth nine figures — which, as prices continue to rise to eye-popping levels with each new transfer window, may not be too far-fetched.“For me, Jamal Musiala is already worth more than 100 million,” Matthaus said. “He’s integral to Bayern Munich and the national team. He makes the difference and scores more and more goals.”At this point, there is likely zero chance that Musiala would be for sale. He is already a key player in both Julian Nagelsmann’s setup in Munich as well as Hansi Flick’s for the German national team.FC Bayern MĂŒnchen v VfL Wolfsburg - Bundesliga Photo by Roland Krivec/DeFodi Images via Getty ImagesHypothetically, however, if Musiala were to be put up for sale at the moment, Matthaus thinks the sky would be the limit.“If someone wants to buy him now, the fee would likely be around €150m,” Matthaus said, before adding: “But that’s not an option anyway because he’s absolutely not for sale. Musiala is the future of the club.”What sorts of clubs do you think might be able to afford Bambi? — not that we’re keen to ever see him leave!

2022-08-20 02:20:14 ManĂ© celebrates with Musiala after the first goal against VfL Wolfsburg.Photo by Simon Hofmann/Bundesliga/Bundesliga Collection via Getty ImagesSadioly, Bayern don’t have manĂ© jerseys, so they request you to be patient. If you’ve a hankering for a #42 or #17 this year, you may have to wait. Bayern Munich’s new jersey sales are surging and it’s created a bit of a stock issue — to the point that Bayern board member Jan-Christian Dreesen spoke to Tz to address the situation, as captured by @iMiaSanMia.“The demand for our three shirts this season is significantly higher than the past few years. As a result, individual sizes are unfortunately out of stock from time to time,” Dreesen said. “But we’re working intensively so that our fans get the shirts they want.”Sadio Mané’s #17 is the top seller after the Senegalese forward’s arrival from Liverpool early on in this summer’s transfer window. There was much talk then about the profile of player Bayern had secured and how positive it was for the Bundesliga as a whole — and his popularity is already manifesting.“That makes us very happy,” Dreesen said. “It’s a confirmation that we brought a global star to Munich that will immediately fulfill all the expectations and is also an absolute fan favourite.”Also per Tz, a Senegalese fan was so excited by Mané’s arrival that he recently flew to Munich for the Bundesliga home opener and “bought the Bayern fan store empty” — setting a daily record with his merchandising buys on the Friday before the VfL Wolfsburg game. The fan managed to snag a few selfies with ManĂ© as well, catching the star forward’s attention by waving a Senegal flag.Jamal Musiala’s #42 is the other jersey in top demand.“[Musiala] impressed with his strong performances at the start of the season and is very well liked especially among young fans,” Dreesen said. It’s not the usual number for a footballing star, but it is the meaning of the universe. And besides, Thomas MĂŒller’s #25 isn’t the most common number, either — it just happens to be his favorite. Musiala, even at this early stage, looks poised to follow in the Raumdeuter’s footsteps as a Bayern legend for years to come.
