Chinese Mining Billionaire To Invest $300 Million In Zimbabwe Lithium Project

Shanghai-listed mining company Zhejiang Huayou Cobalt, controlled by billionaire Chen Xuehua, will invest $300 million into its Arcadia lithium mine near Harare, Zimbabwe.

Prospect Lithium Zimbabwe, the holding company of the Arcadia project, will use the investment to rapidly develop the lithium mine and construct a plant with a processing capacity of 4.5 million tonnes of ore and a production capacity of 400,00 tonnes of lithium concentrate per year.

During the construction period, Prospect Lithium Zimbabwe will employ 600 local workers, which will be increased to 900 people once production begins. The Arcadia project is slated for commencing delivery of its first batch of production next year.

Chinese miners have recently been targeting Zimbabwe’s lithium mines, which hold a great deal of promise given that most of the lithium reserves in the country are still unexplored.

Taiwan Covid Deaths Hit Daily Record 127, GDP Growth Slowing

Taiwan, home to many of the world’s largest technology companies, reported a daily record 127 Covid deaths on Saturday, amid signs the global pandemic was slowing economic growth both there and around the world.

The Central Epidemic Command Center also reported 80,835 domestic Covid cases on Saturday, down from a single-day record of 94,808 domestic infections on Friday, the Central News Agency said. The pandemic will likely remain at a “high but stable plateau” for at least two weeks in Taiwan.

The record increase in deaths followed a cut in the government’s GDP forecast for 2022 on Thursday to 3.91% from 4.42%, according to the Directorate General of Budget, Accounting and Statistics.

The cut in Taiwan’s expected GDP increase this year comes amid worries of recession or slowing growth in the U.S. and mainland China, the world’s two largest economies. Taiwan ranks No. 22.

Millions Of iPhone Owners Wait For Batterygate Payouts

More than two million iPhone owners are still waiting for their ‘Batterygate’ payouts, more than a year after the case was settled.

Apple agreed to pay at least $310 million to settle the Batterygate case in March 2021, with more than 2.2 million claims for compensation approved before deduplication.

The Batterygate scandal saw @Apple accused of hampering the performance of select iPhone models to improve battery life, something which the company has long denied.

Despite the settlement figure being agreed last March, affected iPhone owners have yet to receive any compensation. The case is reportedly subject to appeals, although no court documents have been filed since March last year. Similarly, the official website for claimants hasn’t been updated in more than a year.

Broadcom Is Buying VMWare For $61 Billion

One of the biggest ever tech acquisitions is about to go down, and it involves two companies you may have never even heard of. Microchip heavyweight Broadcom is set to acquire cloud computing company VMWare, in a deal worth $61 billion in cash and stock.

To put the size of the acquisition in perspective, only two previous takeovers in the tech industry top this deal: Dell’s $67 billion buy-out of data storage company, EMC, in 2015 and Microsoft’s still-in-progress takeover of Activision Blizzard for $68.7 billion.

The deal would see shareholders receiving cash consideration of $142.50 per share or a swap of 0.252 Broadcom stock per VMWare share.

The global microchip shortage has been a catalyst for Broadcom CEO Hock Tan to expand the revenue centers for the company beyond hardware

Bribery Scandal To Cost Glencore $1.1 Billion, While Billionaire Execs Avoid Blame — For Now

Marc Rich, the legendary commodities trader, fled the United States for Europe in 1983. Including Rich the company has birthed at least nine billion-dollar fortunes. The richest of the Glencore gang is former CEO Ivan Glasenberg, at $8.9 billion. Others include Daniel Maté, — $3.6 billion, and Tor Peterson — $2.7 billion.

All three left the company in the past two years, but neither they nor other billionaire executives have yet been fingered in the Department of Justice investigation into Glencore’s misdeeds, resolved this week with the company’s admissions of guilt and $1.1 billion in fines.

According to a statement from U.S. Attorney Damian Williams, the execs likely knew something: “With approval and knowledge of top executives,” Glencore traders for more than a decade until 2018 made illicit payments seem customary.
