William Camden lived in Britain from 1551 to 1623, was a famous English historian, topographer and expert in antiquities. In 1586 he published the first edition of the book "Britain", where he claimed that the stones of Stonehenge were not hewn from the rocks of the quarries discovered, but were made of sand and some kind of binder.
"And is it so strange? After all, we read in Pliny that the sand or ashes of Puteol, when filled with water, turns into true stone"-concrete as it is. Camden is right, there is nothing to be surprised about. Except that our contemporaries do not take the author's words into account.
