Smoke inhalation is the leading cause of death in fire related | Forensic Pathologist

Smoke inhalation is the leading cause of death in fire related fatalities.

Smoke contains carbon monoxide (CO), carbon dioxide (CO2), particles (soot) and other chemicals produced by incomplete burning of carbon-containing materials. Inhalation of carbon monoxide decreases blood oxygen, leading to asphyxia and death. The presence of soot in the airways, coupled with high CO blood level indicate that the decedent was alive and breathing at the time of fire. Pictures show deposition of soot on the tongue, larynx and trachea in a decedent who died of smoke inhalation.
