Elephantiasis is caused by the microscopic, thread-like worm, Wuchereria bancrofti, which is transmitted to humans by the bites of infected mosquitoes. Patients typically present with progressively worsening swelling of the lower extremities, with coarsening and fissuring of the overlying skin. The arms, breasts, and upper body can also be affected.
