2021-03-09 11:01:32 Will eating chocolate make you smarter? (Freshman's Response)

One of the first lessons that you learn in any statistics class is the famous "correlation does not imply causation" idea. In this way, a mere correlation (relationship) between two variables does not mean that they are causally linked. But why is it?

In this particular case, we are dealing with the so-called omitted variable bias. Chocolate consumption is strongly tied to the level of economic development. Sustained economic development, in its turn, affects the level of education together with the country's ability to invest more into human resources. So, as you can see, economic development (omitted variable) affects both chocolate consumption and a number of Nobel Laureates. On top of economic development, there may be a myriad of other omitted variables that could affect the correlation.

Therefore, based on the correlation alone, we cannot be certain that chocolate consumption increases a number of Nobel Laureates in a given country.

A 2012 paper published in New England Journal of Medicine showcased this graph to argue that chocolate consumption positively affects our mental abilities and, thus, increases a number of Nobel Laureates in a given country.

You can even read an article about it on Business Insider: https://www.businessinsider.com/chocolate-consumption-vs-nobel-prizes-2014-4

I know that we discussed this during our classes at Freshman. But this question goes to both our students and those who did not take classes with us: Do you agree with these findings? Why or why not? (Share your thoughts in @freshmanchat)

We will post our take on it tomorrow.

2021-03-08 10:22:11 Freshman's Statement on International Women's Day

First of all, on behalf of Freshman team and community, we would like to congratulate women on International Women's Day. We hope that today will be filled with special care and support from people around you.

On this very day, we would like to share an incredible - yet somewhat unknown to the broader Central Asian audience - story of Malala Yousafzai. At the age of 15, she was boarding the bus to advocate for Pakistani girls' education when a member of a radical group shot her in the head and neck. Though not expected to survive, Malala did recover from the attack and almost two years later received the Noble Peace Prize.

Through inspiring stories of Malala and other plentiful activists, we have seen the high price that women had to pay to reinstate their right for quality education. And yet, there is a lot that has to be done both regionally and internationally.

We call on our colleagues from both private educational institutions and government agencies to unite our efforts to create an environment where every girl and woman have access to education that they rightfully deserve. Only through this strong commitment and coordinated actions that we will be able to advance our society at large, while moving into a new phase of greater development and prosperity.

Happy Women's Day!

2021-03-07 10:55:04 Today's Meet-up

Thanks for joining today! Hopefully, you had a very productive time, gaining insights on both academic and creative writing. I will attach the review of the book that I mentioned during our meeting.

Our next meet-up will be happening next Sunday at 12:00 (midday) Tashkent time! We will be sharing ideas from our favorite books and those that you are currently reading. We will accept 3-4 presentations, lasting for about 5-8 minutes. To participate, send them in a pdf format a couple of hours before our meet-up.

For simplicity, you can summarize insights from one book only. In the end, you will receive questions from the floor and my feedback.

See you next week!

2021-03-06 21:00:01 5 Incredible Facts about Yale-NUS

Yale-NUS is a truly unique place. It manifests in itself the spirits of both Yale University and the National University of Singapore. However, over our 10-year history, Yale-NUS has developed its own distinct features that define our culture and experiences.

1. Absolute inclusivity
At the Ivy League universities and some top Singaporean ones, getting into student clubs might become extremely competitive. As a result, some students find themselves excluded from certain student-led opportunities. Things are different at YNC: there is a policy that promotes complete inclusivity among its students. This means that as a leader of a student organization, you cannot deny a student to join your club!

2. No discrimination based on students’ financial resources
Once you get in YNC, the college will take responsibility not only for your ability to pay for your studies but also for ensuring that you will not be excluded from opportunities because of the lack of money. One example is getting internships, which are often not compensated. Yale-NUS pays its students who take up internships in Singapore, while providing free accommodation on campus. In my first year, I was also able to get full financial aid for the study program, titled “Grand Strategy”, which was run at Yale.

3. Collaborations with professors
Because Yale-NUS is a small college with many of our professors staying on campus, a special relationship developed between our faculty and student body. One of my friends did chemical research together with her professor. Their work ended up being published in a well-known scientific journal. I was often invited to my professors’ homes for dinner or meet-ups. These stories are not a rarity here.

4. Travelling opportunities
Before the infamous virus hit, our campus used to have much fewer people because they traveled for one reason or another. Only in my freshman year, I managed to visit quite a few places: Hong Kong, Bali, Malaysia, the US, not counting Singapore itself. Whether it is a summer school, study-abroad program, or travel grant, ways to see different parts of the world are numerous here.

5. Outstanding faculty
Something very prominent on campus is the level of faculty that the administration manages to bring in. We have professors who founded prominent theories, made scientific breakthroughs, and had extensive experiences in their industries. Last semester, I had a chance to be taught by Prof. Schmertzler who not only lectured at Yale for over 20 years but also worked on the reorganization of Lehman Brothers, the first big bank that collapsed in 2008. It is not unusual that for our classes we are reading the articles and books of our own professors.

Overall, I am super happy that the Central Asian – and Uzbekistan’s in particular – community is growing at Yale-NUS. Through Freshman, I am trying to do my best to allow young talents from the region to get the educational experiences they deserve at Yale-NUS and similar institutions. Let me know if you have any questions.

P.S. Don’t forget about tomorrow’s Express Essay Proofreading/Editing on Zoom, happening at 12 (midday) Tashkent time! Bring in your essays, and I would be happy to give you my feedback.

Good night!
