5 Incredible Facts about Yale-NUS
Yale-NUS is a truly unique place. It manifests in itself the spirits of both Yale University and the National University of Singapore. However, over our 10-year history, Yale-NUS has developed its own distinct features that define our culture and experiences.
1. Absolute inclusivity
At the Ivy League universities and some top Singaporean ones, getting into student clubs might become extremely competitive. As a result, some students find themselves excluded from certain student-led opportunities. Things are different at YNC: there is a policy that promotes complete inclusivity among its students. This means that as a leader of a student organization, you cannot deny a student to join your club!
2. No discrimination based on students’ financial resources
Once you get in YNC, the college will take responsibility not only for your ability to pay for your studies but also for ensuring that you will not be excluded from opportunities because of the lack of money. One example is getting internships, which are often not compensated. Yale-NUS pays its students who take up internships in Singapore, while providing free accommodation on campus. In my first year, I was also able to get full financial aid for the study program, titled “Grand Strategy”, which was run at Yale.
3. Collaborations with professors
Because Yale-NUS is a small college with many of our professors staying on campus, a special relationship developed between our faculty and student body. One of my friends did chemical research together with her professor. Their work ended up being published in a well-known scientific journal. I was often invited to my professors’ homes for dinner or meet-ups. These stories are not a rarity here.
4. Travelling opportunities
Before the infamous virus hit, our campus used to have much fewer people because they traveled for one reason or another. Only in my freshman year, I managed to visit quite a few places: Hong Kong, Bali, Malaysia, the US, not counting Singapore itself. Whether it is a summer school, study-abroad program, or travel grant, ways to see different parts of the world are numerous here.
5. Outstanding faculty
Something very prominent on campus is the level of faculty that the administration manages to bring in. We have professors who founded prominent theories, made scientific breakthroughs, and had extensive experiences in their industries. Last semester, I had a chance to be taught by Prof. Schmertzler who not only lectured at Yale for over 20 years but also worked on the reorganization of Lehman Brothers, the first big bank that collapsed in 2008. It is not unusual that for our classes we are reading the articles and books of our own professors.
Overall, I am super happy that the Central Asian – and Uzbekistan’s in particular – community is growing at Yale-NUS. Through Freshman, I am trying to do my best to allow young talents from the region to get the educational experiences they deserve at Yale-NUS and similar institutions. Let me know if you have any questions.
