2022-03-02 05:54:58 Chris Hedges: Russia Was Baited Into War But That Does Not Absolve Its Criminal Aggression

Preemptive war, whether in Iraq or Ukraine, is a war crime. It does not matter if the war is launched on the basis of lies and fabrications, as was the case in Iraq, or because of the breaking of a series of agreements with Russia, including the promise by Washington not to extend NATO beyond the borders of a unified Germany, not to deploy thousands of NATO troops in Eastern Europe, not to meddle in the internal affairs of nations on Russia’s border and the refusal to implement the Minsk II peace agreement.

The invasion of Ukraine would, I expect, never have happened if these promises had been kept. Russia has every right to feel threatened, betrayed, and angry. But to understand is not to condone. The invasion of Ukraine, under post-Nuremberg laws, is a criminal war of aggression.

2022-03-02 05:04:57 Wheat Futures Are Soaring, and Food Prices Could Be Next

Russia's military attack on Ukraine is causing wheat prices to spike, exacerbating already high food prices.

Wheat futures were up about 5.35% Tuesday (March 1), reaching prices not seen since 2008. The higher prices make wheat more expensive for food makers, who will likely pass those costs on to consumers.

Ukraine and Russia together are responsible for about 14% of global wheat production, according to Gro Intelligence, an agricultural data analytics firm. The two countries supply about 29% of all wheat exports. Prior to the Russian invasion, Ukraine was on track for a record year of wheat exports, while Russia's wheat exports were slowing, according to the US Department of Agriculture.

"This could not come have come in the worse time," said Robb MacKie, president and CEO of American Bakers Association.

With wheat prices already on the rise, the conflict abroad is placing even more pressure on a still ailing supply chain. Russia is the top exporter or wheat, while Ukraine is in the top 5.

Belarus President Stands in Front of Battle Map Appearing to Show Moldova Invasion Plans

Images have emerged of Belarussian President Alexander Lukashenko standing in front of a battle map that appears to show a planned invasion of Moldova, along with Ukraine.

Lukashenko, a close ally of Russian President Vladimir Putin, was reportedly addressing his security council Tuesday (March 1) while standing in front of a battle map of Ukraine.

The map appeared to show troop movement plans and infrastructure targets in Ukraine, as well as targets in Moldova's breakaway region of Transnistria.

Some of the Russian lines of attack in the map have already taken place, while others are yet to occur, including an incursion into Moldova — a former Soviet country and Ukraine’s neighbor to the south — from the port city of Odessa.

2022-03-02 03:54:58 US Sending Stinger Anti-Aircraft Missiles Directly to Ukraine for the First Time

The US is sending Stinger anti-aircraft missiles to Ukraine for the first time as part of the Biden administration’s new $350 million military aid package for the country that was announced last Friday.

The Biden administration recently approved the delivery of US-made Stingers from the Baltic states to Ukraine, but this plan is the first time that the US will be directly supplying the missiles.

Since the 2014 US-backed coup in Kyiv, the US has provided Ukraine with over $2.7 billion in military aid. President Obama was initially hesitant to send Ukraine lethal weapons for fear of provoking Russia. President Trump first took the step to send arms to the Ukrainians in 2017 when he signed off on the delivery of Javelin anti-tank missiles.

The US has also provided Ukraine with small arms, ammunition, and armed patrol boats. The Stingers mark a significant step in US military aid to Ukraine, and the move is sure to further escalate tensions with Moscow.

Stingers are shoulder-fired missiles that can be used to shoot down Russian helicopters. The US infamously provided Stingers to the Afghan Mujahideen to fight the Soviet Union in the 1980s. Many hawks in Washington are openly comparing their plans to arm Ukraine to US support for the Mujahideen against the Soviet Union.

US allies have also pledged to send Stingers to Ukraine, including Germany, which is breaking from its new government’s policy of not sending weapons to conflict zones.

Clinton Compares Ukraine to Afghanistan, Calls U.S. Arming of Mujahideen “The Model” for Helping Ukraine

Hillary Clinton has likened the Russian military operation in Ukraine to the Soviet Union’s 1979 invasion of Afghanistan, saying a similar outcome might be achieved by helping to arm Kiev’s resistance just like Washington backed Mujahideen fighters.

“Remember, the Russians invaded Afghanistan back in 1980 (sic),” Clinton said on Monday (Feb. 28). “And although no country went in, they certainly had a lot of countries supplying arms and advice and even some advisers to those who were recruited to fight Russia.”

As Clinton noted, the Afghanistan war “didn’t end well” for the Soviet Union. “There were other unintended consequences, as we know,” she added—apparently referring to the rise to Al-Qaeda—“but the fact is that a very motivated and then funded and armed insurgency basically drove the Russians out of Afghanistan.”

2022-03-02 02:59:58 Jail Time for Czechs Agreeing With Russian Intervention

The Supreme State Prosecutor of the Czech Republic has warned its citizens that they can wind up in jail if they utter agreement with Russia’s military intervention in Ukraine.

“The Supreme Public Prosecutor’s Office considers it necessary to inform citizens that the current situation associated with the Russian Federation’s attack on Ukraine may have implications for their freedom of expression,” began a statement from the office, dated Feb. 26.

“If someone publicly (including demonstrations, the Internet or social networks) agreed (accepted or supported the Russian Federation’s attacks on Ukraine) or expressed support or praised the leaders of the Russian Federation in this regard, they could also face criminal liability under certain conditions,” the statement says.

The laws the statement cites includes prohibition against “approving of a criminal offense” and “denying, questioning, approving and justifying genocide.” The Czech Republic is a member of both the European Union and NATO.

2022-03-02 02:46:53 Ukrainian Cyber Resistance Group Targets Russian Power Grid, Railways

A Ukrainian cyber guerrilla warfare group plans to launch digital sabotage attacks against critical Russian infrastructure such as railways and the electricity grid, to strike back at Moscow over its invasion, a hacker team coordinator told Reuters.

Officials from Ukraine's defense ministry last week approached Ukrainian businessman and local cybersecurity expert Yegor Aushev to help organize a unit of hackers to defend against Russia.

On Monday (Feb. 28), Aushev said he planned to organize hacking attacks that would disrupt any infrastructure that helps bring Russian troops and weapons to his country.

"Everything that might stop war," he told Reuters. "The goal is to make it impossible to bring these weapons to our country."

Aushev said his group has already downed or defaced dozens of Russian government and banking websites, sometimes replacing content with violent images from the war.

2022-03-02 02:00:34 World Bank, IMF Racing to Get Billions of Dollars to Ukraine in Coming Weeks

The International Monetary Fund and World Bank on Tuesday said they were racing to provide billions of dollars of additional funding to Ukraine in coming weeks and months, adding the war there is creating "significant spillovers" to other countries.

IMF chief Kristalina Georgieva and World Bank President David Malpass said the war was driving commodity prices higher, which risked further fueling inflation, and disruptions in financial markets would continue to worsen should the conflict persist. Sanctions imposed by the United States, Europe and other allies would also have a significant economic impact.

2022-03-02 01:34:57 World’s Largest Shipping Lines Suspend Service to Russia Over Western Sanctions

Two of the world’s largest container shipping lines have announced that they are cutting service to Russia as Western sanctions that aim to isolate the Russian economy start to bite.

The Dutch container shipping giant Maersk announced that it was temporarily suspending shipments to all Russian ports, although it is allowing exemptions for foodstuffs, medical, and humanitarian goods.

“As the stability and safety of our operations is already being directly and indirectly impacted by sanctions, new Maersk bookings to and from Russia will be temporarily suspended, with exception of foodstuffs, medical and humanitarian supplies,” Maersk said in a statement.

The Swiss-based Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC) also announced Tuesday that it was stopping cargo booking for inbound and outbound shipments for Russia. MSC said the ban applies to “all access areas including Baltics, Black Sea, and Far East Russia.” MSC will also allow exemptions for food, medical, and humanitarian goods.

The suspensions mean Russia is now cut off from a significant chunk of the world’s shipping capacity. Maersk alone owns and charters over 700 ships and accounts for 17 percent of the globe’s merchant container fleet.

US mail carriers UPS and FedEx have also announced that they are suspending deliveries to Russia. Other American companies have taken action to cut off business with Russia, including oil companies Shell and BP.

Some Russian citizens have denounced the Western sanctions as collective punishment since many inside Russia will bear the consequences. US sanctions and other economic pressure generally do little to change the target government, but they have a history of hurting ordinary people.
