NEW CALEDONIA (FRANCE): INDEPENDENTISTS TAKE CONTROL OF LOCAL GOVERNMENT In New Caledonia (a French island), the Independentists managed to take control of local government for the first time in history.
A new independence referendum is planned for the end of 2022.
The island is under tension, deeply divided between the white (pro-French) and the Kanak (pro-independence) population.
Some fear that independence will lead to "ethnic cleansing" against whites. Others argue that independence is a moral necessity.
Tensions have escalated in recent months, with major ethnic violence in late 2020.
