The gods were disturbed by the growth and popularity of the demon king Mahabali. So they asked Vishnu for help. Mahavishnu, transformed into the form of Vamana, a poor dwarf Brahmin and went to the kingdom of Mahabali. He asked kind king Mahabali for three feet of soil. Mahabali agreed to fulfill Vamana's wish.

But suddenly the dwarf began to grow, and his first feet covered the earth and his second feet covered the sky. There was no room left for the third feet, and Mahabali then requested Vamana to place the third leg on his head, thus burying himself in the underworld.

However, Vishnu was impressed by Mahabali's devotion and said that he would return to earth once a year to visit his people and country during Onam. Therefore, Onam is celebrated every year during this period.
