GET READY TO RECEIVE

ONE VERY HOT AFTERNOON, at a school picnic, a teacher was going round with a gallon of cool drink and ladling out portions to the thirsty. He came to a small boy who had had a busy morning. He was sweating profusely, obviously quite hot. He was clearly thirsty. There the teacher was with the gallon of cool drink and a desire to get rid of it speedily. Nothing would have given him greater pleasure than to give his young friend all he could drink. But he had no cup. He had no way of receiving what the teacher was offering freely. Fortunately someone was able to come and give a cup and the lad did not die of thirst in the midst of plenty. But the cup he eventually held out in no way merited the gift. The cup was indispensable. Without it he could not receive the cool drink. But the cup was no more than the means by which he received it.

“You can’t ask God for something and then not be prepared to receive. . . “

More often than not, the breakthrough we seek is only delayed because we have not made room to receive it — we are unwilling to let go of the past, or the present, or something... So long as the ‘old car’ is parked in ‘the driveway’, it’s going to be very difficult (if not impossible) to let the ‘new car’ in. How do you receive anything at all with clenched fists?

Let go. Make room. Prepare for what is coming. Prepare for the rain. Prepare for what you asked for. Because it’s coming!
