Police Alert - New Phishing Scam on WhatsApp
• When using online search engines, the query “WhatsApp Web” may produce returns that include links to fake websites.
• When victims click to access a fake website and scan the QR code provided, this allows a scammer to log into the victim’s WhatsApp account from a new linked device.
• Scammers then impersonate victims & ask the victims’ contacts for transfer of monies or personal/banking details.
ADD security to your use of WhatsApp by enabling the ‘Two-Step Verification’ feature. Activate your notifications to be alerted to changes to linked devices.
CHECK that you are using the official WhatsApp Web website - https://web.whatsapp.com. Check your “Settings” for unauthorised linked devices. Be wary of unusual requests from your contacts whose accounts may be compromised.
TELL and report fraudulent transactions to your bank and Police immediately.
