The Turkish demands for demilitarization and the Lausanne trea | /GBG/ - Greek Borders General

The Turkish demands for demilitarization and the Lausanne treaty of 1923
Link to treaty

The Turkish demands for the demilitarization of Greek islands is based on the Lausanne Treaty, of which Turkey is a signatory state and thus, is allowed to invoke the treaty and other signatory states in case there are violations

The first thing to be noted is the fact that the Lausanne treaty does not say that Greek islands must be completely demilitarized which is what Turkey demands

Secondly, the treaty itself forbids Greek aircraft from performing overflight over coastal areas of Turkey as well as forbids Turkey from flying over Greek islands, which is being followed by Greece but not Turkey

The treaty clearly states that Greece is allowed to have a proportional number of military personnel in such islands compared to the rest of the military forces in Greece as well as the number of its citizens who were drafted for military service

In conclusion, Turkey's claims are completely invalid
