INSULATION
The primary line of insulation, and sometimes the only one available, is worn clothing. Burrowing into a mummy bag is warm and comfortable, but drastically increases response time in case of an emergency. Like the poncho, the poncho liner or “woobie” has long been the Infantryman’s best friend when used as a blanket. Similar insulated blankets and quilts work as well, including wool blankets (though they’re big and heavy). However, in lieu of the trusty woobie, layered, dry clothing must often suffice. Some pieces of specialty gear, such as the US military ECWCS Level VII extreme cold weather parka and paints, can provide the warmth of a sleeping bag without hindering response time or mobility.
