What is it like living with mental illnesses? Is it really that bad?

People with mental illnesses often experience thoughts such as “I’m NOT GOOD ENOUGH!”, “DO I MATTER?” etc.

These are just a slice of what someone with mental illness experiences. Watch this animated film to find out what they have to go through!

2021-08-17 02:00:11 Sometimes, we may be at a loss of what to do when someone we know is diagnosed with a mental illness.

Here are 5 Do’s and Don’ts of dealing with other’s mental illnesses!

Do’s
1. Show them that you still care
2. Understand their illness better through research

Don’ts
3. Allow your negative emotions to be visible
4. Tell or remind them that “I could be worse.”
5. Try to relate how they feel to your own experiences
(unless you have the same illness)

It's time for another Funtimes Fridays! Let's play a game of choices!

Elliot is an 18-year-old male who is currently studying in a polytechnic. He is the captain and the star player of the football team.

About 3 months ago, Elliot started to skip trainings and when he does come for it, he is always exhausted. Because of his bad attendance, he has later stripped of his captain role and was no longer the team's star player. As a result, his teammates turned their backs on him and judged him for being lazy. His teammates turned their backs on him and judged him for being lazy. Many of them thought that Elliot was simply arrogant – after all, since he was captain and star player, he could do whatever he wanted.

Put yourself in the shoes of someone experiencing mental illness. Every day, you are battling with demons in your mind. On top of that, society constantly shuns away from you, and your friends and family aren’t being supportive. It’s unpleasant, isn’t it?

As the next generation of leaders in Singapore, let’s strive to make Singapore a supportive and inclusive place for all!

Do you think mental health stigma is present in Singapore?

Mental Health Stigma refers to societal disapproval. It occurs when society shames people diagnosed with a mental illness or those who seek help for emotional distress (such as anxiety, depression, bipolar disorder, or PTSD).

This stigma affects a person as it may cause them to be denied equal life opportunities in areas such as employment and housing. In addition, they may also face discrimination from others.

Sad to say that the culture and environment around us largely influence it.

A recent study by IMH showed that mental health stigma is indeed present on our shores. For deeper reading, do check out this research piece by IMH!
