Remembering Constantinople (29th May 1453)

568 years ago, the great Christian capital of Constantinople sat at the heart of the vanished Byzantine Empire. The conquering Ottomans, already possessing Anatolia to the east, and the Balkans to the west, had besieged the city for 53 days. With Mehmed II at the helm of an overwhelming Muslim army, they pounded at the Walls of Constantinople with cannon fire, and the brave men of the city fought to the bitter end.

The Greek city, which had become the elect seat of power of the Roman Empire in 330 AD by order of Emperor Constantine, had withstood the test of time and outlived the western remnants of the Empire by 1000 years as a crown-jewel of Christendom. The Muhammadan hordes had conquered the last Greek civilisation, and Hellenic high-culture would never rise again. Here we stand on the precipice of a different yet not too dissimilar invasion of our lands. When we fight, fight that their sacrifice be not in vain.
