The epiglottis (epiglottis) is the cartilage that blocks the entry and exit of the larynx (larynx) during the act of swallowing, thereby preventing food from entering the respiratory tract.
Food safely enters the esophagus (esophagus), and air enters the trachea (trachea)
It is the function of the epiglottis that we interfere with when we talk while eating or are in too much of a hurry. Then food enters the larynx, which causes an instant and strong cough reflex.
After all, if a piece of food gets into the lungs, it can cause respiratory failure and even its complete absence.
