As the Soviet Union went through a period of
glasnost, artists felt more able to express dissent. Many challenged and mocked the regime as Soviet power weakened.

коллективизация (Collectivisation) (Alexander Vaganov, 1989).
The silhouette is Stalin, the blood a result of his tyrannical forcing of collectivisation on Soviet farms.

31 May 1921: The Tulsa Race Massacre takes place in the US. 29 black Americans are confirmed dead, but the figure may be as high as 300, and is no lower than about 75. 13-50 white Americans are killed. The target is the 'Black Wall Street' of Greenwood. After the event, insurance companies do not pay for the damage. It is largely suppressed in discussion until decades later.

After uprisings in 1903-1904, General Lothar von Trotha ordered the execution of Herero men, and ordered that women and children be driven into the desert. The German administration in Berlin struggled to bring Trotha under control, but allowed him to herd Herero and Nama into concentration camps after suspending the extermination. There, many were worked to death.
About half of the 20,000 Nama died. The exact number of Herero deaths is not certain, but estimated to be between 24,000-100,000. The overwhelming majority were not combatants.

'I destroy the African tribes with streams of blood ... Only following this cleansing can something new emerge' - General Lothar von Trotha
Germany has formally recognised the genocide of the Herero and Nama people in what is now Namibia from 1904 to 1908.
