The American flag was designed by a high school student.

The current American flag has 50 stars and was designed by Robert J. Heft. Heft originally designed the American flag in 1958 as a school project during his high school years. Heft received a grade of "B" on his design, but Stanley Pratt, his teacher, promised that his grade would be revised if the U.S. Congress passed the flag design. Heft's design was not only chosen, but adopted by the 1959 presidential proclamation.
