2021-03-10 09:12:39 IELTS Writing Task 1: double, twice as, twofold

Do you know how to use 'double', 'twice as', 'three times', 'twofold', 'threefold'? Let’s compare how each word/phrase is used in the following examples:

'double' (verb)

The number of unemployed people doubled between 2005 and 2009.

'twice as...as/compared to', 'three times as...as/compared to'

There were twice as many unemployed people in 2009 as in 2005.
Twice as many people were unemployed in 2009 compared to 2005.

'twofold', 'threefold' (adjective or adverb)

There was a twofold increase in the number of unemployed people between 2005 and 2009. (adjective with the noun 'increase')
The number of unemployed people increased twofold between 2005 and 2009. (adverb with the verb 'increase')

Try using these forms in your own sentences. Make sure you follow the patterns.

2021-03-10 09:11:01 IELTS Speaking Part 2: Essential Preparation

It's impossible to prepare for every question that you might get in the speaking test, but what are the essential things to prepare for?
Here's a list of essentials:

Favourites: Don't go into the test without knowing what your favourites are. Prepare to talk about your favourite book, film, music, and website.
People: Be ready to talk about a famous person and a member of your family.
Activities: Have you prepared some ideas about a hobby? Can you describe a typical day in your life?
Events: Try to remember some special moments in your life, such as birthdays, festivals and weddings.
Places: You need to be able to talk about where you live. Also, think about the places you have visited, what you did there, and why you liked or didn't like them.
Objects: Can you talk about the things you use every day, something you would like to buy, or a present that you received?

Remember that in part 2 you are always asked to ‘describe’ something. Make sure you prepare some good adjectives for each topic, and make sure you can talk about your opinions and feelings, and think about some examples or stories to make your descriptions more interesting.

IELTS Writing Task 2: the BIG mistake

There is a question to be addressed:

If the question asks "To what extent do you agree or disagree?” can I discuss the two views of other people and end with my opinion in the conclusion, similar to discuss both views

The answer is definitely NO. This is a big mistake that many candidates make - they write a "discussion" essay instead of an "opinion" essay.
When the question asks "To what extent do you agree or disagree?", you should state your view in the introduction, support it in the main body paragraphs, and repeat or summarize it in the conclusion. The whole essay needs to mainly focus on YOUR view.

Familiarize yourself with different question types, and learn how to approach each.

IELTS Writing: Spelling Tips

Spelling mistakes can affect your score in both listening and writing tests. If you have a problem with spelling, here are some tips:

Type your essays. Your computer will find your spelling mistakes and you need to keep a track of them.

When writing by hand, use a dictionary to check difficult words. Never ignore words you are not sure how to write.

Keep a list: write down any mistakes your computer/teacher finds and review them regularly.

Test yourself on words you previously spelt wrongly.

Never give your teacher an essay that you have not checked.

If you find that spelling is a big problem, you should work on it every day. Keep a notebook or put posters on your walls. If you do nothing, you will not improve; there is no secret rule that will suddenly solve the problem.
