In English, if you want to follow a verb with another action, you must use a gerund or infinitive. For example:

We resumed talking. (gerund – verb + ing)

I want to see a movie. (infinitive – to + base verb)

There are certain verbs that can only be followed by one or the other, and these verbs must be memorized. Many of these verbs are listed above.

2022-03-14 11:36:17 There's no such thing as a free lunch

Meaning
We cannot get something for nothing. We must pay for everything. Nothing in life is free.

Origin
Often attributed to the American economist and Nobel Prize winner Milton Friedman (1912-2006), this saying was around at least by the 1950s. Friedman popularized but did not originate it.

Variety
This saying is typically used in American English but may be used in other varieties of English too.

2022-03-14 11:35:37 once in a blue moon

Meaning
If something happens once in a blue moon, it happens very rarely.

For example

We hardly ever go out these days, though once in a blue moon we might go and see a movie.

My daughter lives in Brazil and she only comes to see us once in a blue moon; maybe every two or three years if we're lucky.
