Genesis Chapter 24 Summary: So Abraham was now really old and he called one of his servants, the oldest servant who was master over all of Abraham’s things, to come to him because he wanted to make him swear an oath, an oath to protect his ordained lineage.
He asked him to place his hand under his thigh, which according to custom then this meant that it was a very serious oath.
He said, "Please, put your hand under my thigh, and I will make you swear by the LORD, the God of heaven and the God of the earth, that you will not take a wife for my son from the daughters of the Canaanites, among whom I dwell; but you shall go to my country and to my family, and take a wife for my son Isaac."
If you remember, the Canaanites were sons of Ham who was son of Noah who were cursed following the incident involving that one weird night with “the nakedness of Noah”. Whatever it was, it was bad enough that the entire chain of Canaan’s descendants are cursed and Abraham STRICTLY forbode his son Isaac from marrying any one from their descendants.
Apparently Abraham thought that his days were numbered and that he may die before his servant returned so he made sure that this oath and these instructions were very clear. When the servant asked all the what if’s Abraham said to him, “Beware that you do not take my son back there. The Lord God of heaven, who took me from my father’s house and from the land of my family, and who spoke to me and swore to me, saying, ‘To your descendants I give this land,’ He will send His angel before you, and you shall take a wife for my son from there. And if the woman is not willing to follow you, then you will be released from this oath; only do not take my son back there.”
Then the servant took 10 of the finest camels and packed a caravan heading out to the land of Nahor in the Mesopotamia, the place where Abraham’s family lived. After arriving he made the camels wait outside the city by the well of the water in the evening for that is when the women go out to draw water. He had devised a plan to find the perfect woman, so he asked God: “ O God of my master Abraham, please grant me success today and show lovingkindess to my master Abraham. Let it be that the woman I speak to and say “please let down your jar so that I may drink” AND who answers back ‘Drink and I will also water your camels as well’ that she be the one whom You have appointed for Isaac, and I will know that it is her You chose.
All of a sudden a woman named Rebekah (daughter of Bethuel, Bethuel was the Son of Milcah, Milcah was the Daughter of Haran and the sister to Lot , who also married Nahor, and Nahor and Haran and Abraham were brothers but (remember) Haran died which is why Lot and Abraham were hanging out-convoluted but this is how they kept their bloodlines clean from the evil/wicked ones) appeared down by the spring to fill her jar. She was stunningly beautiful and also a virgin. The servant ran to her and said “Please let me drink a little water from your jar”. She said “Drink, my lord. And Also I will draw for your camels until they have finished drinking as well” (mind you there are 10 camels, and each one can drink at least 20 gallons, so she has at least an hour’s worth of work to do. So this little lady was quite the woman to offer up such a thing- amazing). The servant stared at her wondering whether this was the SUCCESS he was hoping for from the LORD.
When the camels finished drinking the man took a gold nose ring and 2 gold bracelets for her and asked “Whose daughter are you? Please tell me there is room to lodge in your father’s house?” She told him who she was and he recognized that she belonged to the family of Abraham, and she said “We have plenty of both straw and feed, and a room to lodge in.”
Then the servant bowed to the LORD and worshiped for he had truly found the woman he hoped to find.
