Topic: RUNNING

● Do you like running?
● Have you ever run a long-distance?
● Would you prefer to watch a running competition live or on TV?
● Do you think running is a good way to stay healthy?

1. Do you like running?
Not much. I have vague memories of participating in running races when I was in school.
Nowadays, I run only when my friends call me. It was just last week when we chose to run around a hill. We completed a full circle. We also took in some medicinal air because the hill
was full of herbs.

2. Have you ever run a long-distance?
Well, my Company organizes marathons once in a while. My friends forced me to participate in it. So, I have run some marathons. It feels nice when you run across places of scenic beauty with friends around. We also do barefoot running occasionally.

3. Would you prefer to watch a running competition live or on TV?
I prefer to watch it on television. It is interesting to find out who the fastest runner is. I do tune in to watch the Olympics and find out where my country stands.

4. Do you think running is a good way to stay healthy?
Undoubtedly, yes. Most importantly, it helps in improving cardiovascular fitness. But, unfortunately, most people have restricted themselves to treadmills now.

VOCABULARY
race(noun) - a competition between runners, horses, vehicles, etc. to see which is the fastest in covering a set course.
Eg: He won in the bike race.

Marathon (noun) - a long-distance running race, strictly one of 26 miles 385 yards (42.195 km)
Eg: She won a gold medal in the marathon for girls.

Barefoot running (adj phrase) - the act of running without footwear.
Eg: Barefoot running helps in strengthening the muscles.

Treadmills (noun) - a device used for exercise, consisting of a continuous moving belt on which
to walk or run.
Eg: Treadmill test is conducted to check the functioning of the heart.

“Inglizcha” quloq uchun rasmiy tuyuladi (so‘zlashuvda odatda first, second, third qo‘llaniladi), biroq tilni yaxshi bilishingizni ko‘rsatadi. Ammo in the first, in the second va hk. ko‘rinishida qo‘llab bo‘lmaydi.

Firstly, I prefer airplane because it’s fast. Secondly, they give you meals, and thirdly, I like a view from the window.

4. Never ever
«Hech qachon»
“Hech qachon” so‘zi ma'nosini kuchaytirish uchun xizmat qiladi.

I will never ever do it again.
Men boshqa hech qachon bunday qilmayman.

5. It’s not rocket science
«Bu oliy matematika emas»
Agar kimdir nimanidir murakkab desa-yu, siz esa buni noto‘g‘ri deb hisoblasangiz, ingliz tilida (so‘zma-so‘z aytganda) “bu raketa ilmi emas” tariqasida aytishingiz mumkin.

Managing people is hard but it’s not rocket science.

«Haqiqatan ham», «shubhasiz»
Bu so‘z aytilgan gap yoki rozilikni kuchaytirish ma'nosida qo‘llaniladi.

13. May I be excused?
«Tashqariga chiqsam maylimi?»
Ro‘yxatimizdagi bebaho gavhar ibora mana shu. O‘nta ingliz tili o‘qituvchisidan “Chiqsam bo‘ladimi?”ni qanday aytishni so‘rab ko‘ring. Ulardan to‘qqiztasi «May I get out?», «May I go out?» shakllarini aytadi.

Today we are going to learn two idioms with the word 'apple'.

be the apple of sb's eye - to be loved very much by someone, especially by an older member of your family.
I became a father late in life and Geraldine was the apple of my eye.
His youngest daughter was the apple of his eye.

Cambridge Dictionary definition:
the apple of sb's eye - the person who someone loves most and is very proud of.

a bad apple in the barrel/a rotten apple in the barrel - someone dishonest or immoral who has a bad effect on others in a group
I really loved my job, but there was this one jerk there who made life miserable for everyone. One bad apple spoils the whole barrel, unfortunately.
It is hoped the inquiry will pick out the bad apples in the police force.

Collins Dictionary definition:
a bad apple - a person who is corrupt or wicked
