Let's talk about conjunctions.

More specifically, coordinating conjunctions.

These particular conjunctions have slightly different rules to other ones. The coordinating conjunctions are:

- and
- but
- so
- yet
- or
- nor
- for

Honestly, you only really need to worry about 'and / but / so' for what I'm talking about today.

When you read news articles and books, you will often see sentences beginning with 'and / but / so'. However, essays are quite formal and some teachers may consider it to be a bit too casual to start sentences with these, especially 'and' and 'but'.

There are simple alternatives, depending on the context, that I would recommend as replacements for the start of your sentences.

* and -> also / furthermore / in addition
* but -> however / nevertheless
* so -> thus / therefore / as a result

Note: Be careful. Some of these have slightly different applications too, for example 'therefore' and 'as a result' are used in slightly different ways.

The other little point to remember about 'and / but / so' is when they are in the middle of a sentence combining two clauses, they should have a comma before them (not after).

Cheers
