The Colombian authorities have deployed police and special forces in all major cities of the country - Cali, Medellin, Bogota, Caldos, Yumbo and more. Interestingly, the authorities are not even trying to play the "good cop - bad cop" game. Violence escalates immediately after formal negotiations with the protesters.

Although the central government still has the ability to extinguish the embers of the civil war, there is a feeling that in Bogota everything is run by "hawks" from the law enforcement agencies. For people like Defense Minister Diego Molano, it is easier to see protesters as Cuban "agents" led by FARC militants than as citizens with whom to negotiate.
