2021-08-19 07:50:36 `|The Spirituality of Ashura

Every year, Ashura is commemorated by hundreds of millions of lovers of the Holy Progeny of the Holy Prophet, peace be upon them, for the tremendous struggle that Imam Husayn ❪؏❫, went through to revive the religion of God and protect its light from being forever extinguished, as God Almighty states: “They want to put out the light of God with their mouths, but God will certainly make His light shine forever – even though the disbelievers may dislike this.” [The Holy Quran, 61:8] At the same time, with every year and every commemoration, there is an individual responsibility to learn from the lessons set forth by Imam Husayn ❪؏❫ on that day that we must all consider. Perhaps the most important lesson is the development of our spirituality through the guidelines that Imam Husayn ❪؏❫ set forth through his actions.

As the narrations describe, the eve of Ashura was one of worship, prayer, and remembrance of God Almighty. It was such devotion that helped fortify the spiritual resolve that Imam Husayn❪؏❫ and his companions demonstrated on the day of Ashura. To possess the level of spirituality enabling one to stand in the face of imminent death, while having the serenity of absolute and unwavering contentment, is a profound lesson for the followers of the Holy Progeny ❪؏❫. Perhaps one may argue that Imam Husayn ❪؏❫ was able to achieve this due to his divine infallibility. The question, however, then remains with regard to his companions; how did they reach that level of spiritual resolve? The worship and sincere remembrance of God that took place on the eve of Ashura was laid upon an existing foundation of worship and remembrance that was built over years of practice. As companions and lovers of the Holy Progeny ❪؏❫, they took notice of the endless worship of God throughout the nights by the Holy Prophet ﷺ; they took notice the remembrance of God through the silently moving lips of Imam Ali ❪؏❫; and they took notice of the constant praise and thanks to God by Imam Hassan and Imam Husayn ❪؏❫. Nothing less than applying these lessons would prepare a soul to face down those who would seek to destroy it with such contentment.

So, as we gather to commemorate Ashura with solemnity, let each one of us use the occasion as a lesson to diligently apply the remembrance of God Almighty and to better connect with our Creator. In this manner, with every passing year we may build the spiritual foundation to emulate the resolve of the companions of Imam Husayn ❪؏❫, so that perhaps one day we can achieve the level of devotion and spirituality needed to stand and truly, sincerely resonate the words, “We wish we were there (defending Imam Husayn❪؏❫ ) with you, so that we would achieve a glorious victory
.”

2021-07-17 22:41:52 ۞Imam Muhammed Al-Baqir ❪؏❫ Conversation with a Christian Scholar

Imam Sadiq ❪؏❫ said, “one day I and my father came out of the assembly of Hisham. We happened to pass by a place where a group of Christians had come to ask questions from their scholar. We too went there to see what the affair was.
We saw an old man with grey hair and grey eyebrows sitting among them. We also sat among the aggregation. The followers of Jesus Christ ❪؏❫ were sitting before him like worthless children, and were asking him questions. The old man’s eye caught the sight of my father Imam Muhammed Al-Baqir ❪؏❫ and he said, “Are you from among us or from among the followers of Muhammed ﷺ.”
My father answered “from among the followers of Muhammed ﷺ”. He said, “Are you from among the scholars or the ignorant”? My father said, “I am not from among the ignorant.” The old man said, “Shall I ask you question or you will ask me.” My father said, “You question me.”
The aged man was surprised. He had a look upon my father and said, “Oh servant of God, let me know about the time which is neither day nor night.”
My father replied, “Between the dawn and the sunrise.”
He asked, “From which time is it?”
My father said, “From the times (hours) of the Paradise, the ailing ones gain their senses in this hour (time), the pains become relieved, and the one who had a sleepless night goes to sleep at this time.”
The man said, “The people in paradise eat and drink but do not excrete anything, is there anything in the world similar to them?”
My father said, “Yes the embryo which eats in the mother womb but nothing segregates from whatever it eats.”
The man said, “Let me know if there is anything in the world similar to your claim that the people in paradise eat and drink but nothing is lessened and shortened, and that returns to its original shape.”
My father said, “Yes it is candle that if a hundred other candles are lit by it, nothing gets lessened out of it.”
The Christian scholar got up from his place and said, “This man is wiser than me.” When he knew that he was Imam Muhammed Al-Baqir ❪؏❫, he embraced Islam

Imam sadiq has said ❪؏❫ : Two units of prayers said by a married person is better in the Opinion of God than seventy units of prayers said by an unmarried person.
