There is an important story here. For Brian Kernighan, Dennis Ritchie, and Ken Thompson, the design of Unix was truly a labor of love. All they cared about was building the best, most efficient systems possible. It never occured to them to build systems that would spy on or harm Americans. It is a far cry from the slash-and-burn history of Farmer Bill Gates and his goals of market (and world) domination with Microsoft Windows.
