Dear Job Seekers,
Last week, we posted a Job Alert on several Social Media platforms, for a particular vacancy in our company. We received more than 350 CVs. I would like to share my experience with the intention of helping job seekers!
More than 90% of the applicants did NOT read the post properly and just emailed their CVs, most of them without any message or covering letter to support their application.
Tip: Always have a covering letter or email, which is short and to the point. Employers don’t have time to read lengthy applications, especially if candidates don’t even qualify for the job being advertised.
Most of the CVs were so poorly drafted that even if the candidates were worthy, they would not have made it to the selection stage. Job hunting is a serious business. It requires one to portray and market themselves professionally.
Tip: Seek Professional help in writing a good CV or just Google it. Your CV is the passport to a brighter future. Take it seriously. Invest in it!
There were some applicants who were so enthusiastic that they included ALL their Certifications & relevant Documents as a LARGE file attachment, which would be difficult to download! They even attached a copy of their ID.
Tip: there is really NO need to send additional documents until you have been shortlisted! Put emphasis on sending a professionally written CV and cover letter. DO NOT circulate your ID. It could be misused if gotten in the wrong hands!
Some applicants tried to use such big words and grammar in their covering letters, that it immediately took away their authenticity!
Tip: Keep it Simple. Use plain English. We are not trying to impress the Queen of England!
Then there were a few lucky ones we shortlisted and sent emails requesting for additional information, Guess what? They didn’t even bother to respond. If one cannot respond to a potential employer, how are they ever going to get the job?
Tip: Timely and accurate response is the key to success. You snooze, you lose! So, drop whatever it is you are doing and respond to the Advertiser ASAP.
Overall, it feels like job seekers are treating job hunting as an act of gambling. Like going to the casino and placing bets on black or red, hoping to strike it lucky! What are the odds of beating the casino? Very minimal!
Tip: Sending your CV blindly to every job vacancy is the worst thing you could do to yourself. When you get no response or rejections, your self-esteem will be deflated, making your situation even worse. And most Employers won’t even bother to give you a reason for the rejection. So please, only apply for jobs where you meet the requirements!
Finally, please continue learning and sharpening your skills. Stand out from the crowd. LEARNING IS THE SUPER-POWER OF THE 21ST CENTURY!
