It is formed by the estuaries of the Thejaswini, Karingode and the Perumbra rivers. The 20 km long Lake extends from Cheruvathur in the north and Ezhimala in the south. A barrier island separates the lake from the Arabian Sea. The Kavvayi Lake has an opening towards the Arabian Sea at its northern side in Azhithala.

From Kochi Azhi to Munambam Azhi, the Vembanad lake is popularly known as "Veeranpuzha". In the early 1980s there were regular ferry services from Munambam to Ernakulam. The area has large paddy fields devoid of human habitation. Non-availability of fresh water is a reason for lack of dense human settlements. Veeranpuzha was also known as Kadakkarakkayal കടക്കരക്കായല്‍.
