Special Leave Petition Special Leave Petitions in India holds a prime place in the Judiciary of India, and has been provided as a "residual power" in the hands of Supreme Court of India to be exercised only in cases when any substantial question of law is involved, or gross injustice has been done.

SLP can be filed against any judgment of High Court within 90 days from the date of judgement.
Or
SLP can be filed within 60 days against the order of the High Court refusing to grant the certificate of fitness for appeal to Supreme Court.

कई बार, जो भी अपनी जाति या धर्म से बाहर शादी करते हैं, उन्हें समाज द्वारा अपनी परंपराओं से वंचित कर दिया जाता है। इस प्रकार, उन लोगों के हितों की रक्षा के लिए एक कानून की गंभीर आवश्यकता हुई, जो प्रेम के लिए विवाह करने के लिए इन जाति और धार्मिक विभाजन से ऊपर उठे।
स्पेशल मैरिज एक्ट इसलिए लागू किया गया था ताकि अलग-अलग धर्मों को मानने वाले पुरुष और महिला शादी के बाद अपनी धार्मिक पहचान को बरकरार रख सकें।
इस अधिनियम को उन जोड़ों के लिए एक वैधानिक विकल्प के रूप में देखा जाता है जो अंतर-धार्मिक विवाह में अपनी पहचान बनाए रखने के लिए चुनते हैं।
यह अधिनियम भारत के पूरे क्षेत्र (जम्मू और कश्मीर को छोड़कर) पर लागू है और ऐसे भारतीय जीवन साथी हैं जो विदेशों में रह रहे भारतीय नागरिक हैं
इस कानूनी प्रावधान के बाद भी, शादी के बाद धर्म की स्थिति या महिलाओं की जाति जैसे मुद्दे हैं, समाज के उस वर्ग द्वारा स्वीकार्यता जो इस प्रक्रिया को कम पवित्र या वैध मानते हैं।
