2022-04-23 15:33:24 The great social activist and educationist, Pandita Ramabai was born at Canara District in present-day Karnataka.

Highlights of Career
* Ramabai became a recognised scholar in Calcutta.
* The University of Calcutta awarded her the renowned title of ‘Pandita’ because of her proficiency in Sanskrit.
* She was also conferred with the title of ‘Saraswati’ considering her interpretation of the various Sanskrit texts.
* Ramabai established Arya Mahila Samaj (Arya Women’s Society) at Pune, which was aimed at providing education to women and fighting the odds of child marriage.
* When the Govt. appointed a commission to look into education, she urged that women school officials be appointed. She also suggested that Indian women be taken into medical colleges since women doctors were needed to treat women.
* Her movement reached the ears of British monarch which resulted in establishment of Women’s Medical Movement by Lady Dufferin.
* She commenced the the ‘Sharada Sadan’ & founded the Mukti Mission for the education of child widows.
* Ramabai died on 5 April 1922, 9 months after the death of her daughter.
* In October 1989, the Indian government issued a commemorative stamp in her remembrance and honour.
