'Reddit Rebellion’ - a.k.a. Occupy Wall Street 2.0?
Remember these iconic images? The reaction of the Wall Street elite to the marching Occupy demonstrators in 2011?
Today is different. A group of Internet investors decided to teach Wall Street a lesson and fight against hedge funds attempting to capitalise on the COVID-19 lockdowns.
The scheme was so effective, it cost the Wall Street establishment millions as the Reddit-based initiative drove up the stock prices of companies like Gamestop, AMC theaters, and Bed Bath & Beyond with numerous small investments from regular, everyday people.
Reaction now?
Calls for regulation and attempts to shut down the subreddit, with its Discord server being BANNED for ‘hate speech’.
Some analysts even went so far as to accuse the effort of being ‘manipulation’, 'foreign interference' in the US markets, with calls for the Biden administration to step in.
All the suits don't seem to be smiling this time.
