Scientists first started talking about large-scale pollution of space in the 1980s, when the concentration of debris in Earth's orbit reached such a density that ballistics had to work hard to place a satellite safely among it. In the last decade, the situation has only gotten worse. The amount of debris in near-Earth space is so great that it poses a real danger to the automatic stations operating there. In the near future, the difficulties will grow like a snowball.
