I believe God uses our trials to show us who is really there for you. Sometimes our relationships are meant to be short term to help us move on. I always thought once a friend - always a friend. True friends are few and many were never meant to be long term. They served their purpose and catapulted me to move forward on my journey. That saddened me but strengthened me in the long run.
