This prehistoric predator lived in North America at the end of the Pleistocene, about 44,000-10,000 years ago.
The largest specimens could weigh more than 1,400 kg and reach a height of 3.5-4.5 m. The species became extinct towards the end of the glaciation, apparently because the large mammals it hunted disappeared.
Pictured is a model of a giant bear from California's La Brea Ranch Museum.
