Self-hanging in the name of science.
At the beginning of the 20th century, the Romanian forensic doctor Nicolae Minovici decided to find out what happens to people while they are in the noose. To this end, he made several attempts at self-immolation with the help of assistants.
Describing his sensations, the doctor stated: "As soon as my legs came off the support, my eyelids cramped. My airways were blocked so tightly that I could neither inhale nor exhale. There was a kind of whistling in my ears. I could no longer hear the assistant's voice as he pulled the cord and noted the time on the stopwatch. Eventually the pain and lack of air forced me to stop the experiment. When the experiment was over, I went downstairs and tears spurted from my eyes".
After the experiment, Minovici experienced pain in swallowing, thirst for more than 10 days, and the mark of the noose was visible throughout the following week.
