Bootleggers were sellers and purveyors of liquor during the Prohibition years in the United States. Women outnumbered men five to one. The fact is that in many states there was a law forbidding to search women, which the criminal syndicates did not fail to take advantage of. Moreover, women were very eager to join the bootlegging business on their own: despite the danger of the enterprise, the earnings could be fantastic.
