1967. The last official duel in France. The mayor of Marseil | LOST HISTORY

1967. The last official duel in France.

The mayor of Marseilles, Gaston Deffer (facing us), and the presidential candidate of the Socialist Party, René Ribier, dueled on swords. The reason for the duel was Deffer's retort during Ribierre's speech: Taisez-vous, abruti! (Shut up, you moron!) Deffer refused to apologize and so Ribierre challenged him to a duel.

The next day the presidential candidate was to be married and the mayor of Marseilles promised to spoil his wedding night. And so it happened. The 57-year-old Deffer stabbed Ribier twice with his sword, after which the duel was stopped.
