The spiral staircases of medieval castles were built so that the ascent was clockwise.

This was done to give the tower defenders an advantage during hand-to-hand combat in case of a castle siege, as the hardest blow with the right hand could be made only from right to left, which was inaccessible to the attackers.

There is only one castle with a reverse twist, the Wallenstein Counts' castle, as most of the men in that family were left-handed.
