Death.

We see it around us daily, all the more so nowadays with the media bringing global news about famous celebrities passing away. While we pray for the departed soul of Krishnakumar Kunnath or KK, let us contemplate, what death is all about? Is it a Full Stop to our Existence or is there life after death?

Thankfully, however, we never lose our existence. Phrased in terms of a grammatical metaphor, death is a comma, not a full stop. The Bhagavad-Gita (02.22) states that death is just a transition in our existence, not its termination. It explains the nature of this death-time transition through a dress-changing metaphor.

Just like after removing an old dress and putting on a new one, the person remains the same but looks different. Similarly, at death, we give up our old body and acquire a new body; yet we remain the same.

Further, the Gita states that while the body is destructible, the soul is indestructible (02.18). Our loved one – their soul – continues to exist after bodily death. They have transited to another level of existence, a level conducive to their spiritual evolution. Understanding that they live on can allay our fears about their fate. Contemplating that they would want us to live fully, not mournfully, we can strengthen our will to heal.
