Task 2 Sample (Band 7.0+)

In some countries, more and more people are becoming interested in finding out about the history of the house or building they live in.

What are the reasons for this? How can people research this?

Learning about the history of one's accommodation is becoming increasingly popular. There are two main incentives for doing so, and internet archives seem to be the best avenue for this research.

Exploring the origins of residential buildings can be important in two primary ways. Firstly, it is possible that some old structures run the risk of collapsing, hence the need to prevent that. If the building is too old, for example, its residents may be putting their lives under threat, especially when no repair works were undertaken in the recent past. This underscores the importance of researching the history of where people live, as it helps to ensure the safety of the residents. Another plausible explanation is connected to the hidden value certain buildings can have. It is not unlikely that families who used to live in those areas belonged to affluent or royal families. If that were to be the case, such a discovery would certainly generate large profits through re-sale or renting of the residence.

Turning to possible methods of research, perhaps the most effective approach is to look into archived files available online. Information on internet libraries is usually reliable, as opposed to any other type of investigation (such as asking the neighbors). In addition to this, researching on the internet is virtually free and can be performed in the comfort of one's home.

In conclusion, preventing the possibility of collapse, together with effort to generate extra income, seems to be the primary motivation for taking interest in the history of residential buildings. Exploring online archives appears to be the most efficient way to conduct such research.
