On the evening of August 14, it became known that the Taliban militants had occupied Mazar-i-Sharif, the fourth largest city in Afghanistan and the capital of the province of Balkh, which borders Uzbekistan. Thus, of the major cities of the country, only the capital, Kabul and Jalalabad in the east, remain under the control of the government headed by President Ashraf Ghani.
