signing of eriksen is brilliant because he is a player that offers us a lot
fantastic set piece taker - statistically, last year the most efficient player on set pieces in the league. can play as an 8 and a 10, offers us depth on the wings as well.
but the scary part about the players we are targeting so far is that we don't seem to be improving in areas we really need to improve. assuming we do get martinez and de jong as our last signings, we would geniunely have no defensive midfielders.
de jong is not a defensive midfielder. his best position is as an 8, progressing the ball and carrying it up the field. martinez is primarily a cb, though he can play cdm, but he hasn't played cdm for 3 years.
maybe the plan for ten hag is to play martinez as cdm which gives frenkie/eriksen the licence to push forward. in pre season, we saw mctominay as the 4 which gave the other midfielders license to push forwards. but it feels like martinez was definitely signed to play at cb which makes me fear our only holding dm would be mctominay, who always hides from the ball and is incapable of progressing it from deep
