The diagrams describe a cyclical process that a salmon goes through in its entire life. The process includes three stages in which a salmon develops from an egg into a full-sized adult salmon in nearly ten years.

Salmons choose the stony base of reeds in the upper part of a river where the flow is gradual and smooth as an ideal location to lay eggs. It takes about 5 to 6 months for fries to hatch from eggs. These fries which are about 3 to 8 cm long then settle in the fast-moving lower river for around 4 years until they become smolts that measure up to 15 cm in size. Smolts reside in the open sea for another five years before reaching maturity and turning into 70-76 cm adult salmons. Once they become adults, they swim back to the upper river in order to reproduce in a similar location to where they first hatched.
